Despite a small number of Thai films selections this year, your Bangkok visit is still a worthy trip. But dont limit yourself only with the films in the festival. Look around and you will never lose your chance to catch up recent Thai cinema. Here are some tips and recommended films that you should have a look or at least buy DVD, outside the festival.
During the Bangkok Film Festival on 17-27, there will be two important films to be in commercial theatres. The list included: Ghost of Valentine by Yuthlert Suppapak, to be released since 9 February. And I believe by the time of the festival, the movie will still be there. Yuthlerts work is a darling to all Thais and normally his works are on screen at least for three weeks. Luckily, my sharp-tongue friend gives his one thump up. (He kept the other thump down due to the unconvincing story). The film is distributed by either Mang Pong or Sahamongkol Film.
Dorm by Songyos Sukmakanan, one of the six directors who gained success from My Girl. Dorm is a horror/thriller about the dorm lives in a school. Thats all we know. The film will be released on 23 February. Try to book a ticket in the morning to avoid a long que. This is one of the awaiting films for the locals this year. So expect the crowds! Or else contact GTH.
The following films are from the companies that might not join the festival but still worth to see.
MUST SEE
Midnight My Love (Sahamongkol Film, DVD available but no subtitle)
Crying Tigers (Sahamongkol Film, DVD available but no subtitle)
Hello Yasothorn (Sahamongkol Film, DVD available but no subtitle)
The Tiger Blade (Mono Film)
2 ND CLASS: You can pass them. But if you have time, you might like them. Some parts are good. But some problems with the others.
The Remaker (Film Bangkok)
Tom Yam Goong (Sahamongkol Film, VCD, no subtitle)
7 Street Fighters (Sahamongkol Film, no subtitle)
Ghost Variety (Sahamongkol Film)
Promise Me Not (Matching Motion Picture)
Dek-dane (Phranakorn)
Good DVD shops can be found around the town. But try Mang Pong (pronounced Maeng Pong), the biggest chain with various branches. One branch is available on 3th/4th Floor (I am not sure) at Siam Paragon.
